5 Steps to Take If Your Computer Won't Shut Down

1. Force a Shutdown

A frozen program or another software issue can disable the on-screen “shut down” menu. If the feature doesn’t do anything, try to force a shutdown manually. With most computers, all you have to do is hold down the power button until the machine turns off.

2. Disable Fast Startup

Windows® 10 features a fast startup function that can accidentally trigger an automatic restart. To disable this function, click the “Start” button and select the “settings” dialog, which looks like a gear cog. Type “power” in the search box, click on “power and sleep settings,” then choose “additional power settings.”

On the left side of the screen, you’ll see “Choose what the power buttons do.” Finally, click on “change the settings currently available,” then uncheck the box next to “turn on fast startup.”

3. Use the Command Prompt

In the start menu search box, search for “command prompt,” which allows you to manually enter program instructions. When the utility opens, type shutdown /s /f /t 0 and hit “Enter.” The computer should immediately shut down.

4. Run the Update Troubleshooter

An error during a Windows update installation can cause issues that can stop the shutdown process. To run the troubleshooting utility, click on the "Start" button and go to “settings.” Click on “troubleshoot,” then choose “Windows update” under the “get up and running” menu.

5. Shut Down Programs

A frozen program can consume memory and CPU space, leaving the computer without the resources to shut down. Pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL will open the Task Manager, which shows all programs and processes running on your computer. Stop any open programs and kill processes that appear related to an app. When everything is closed, you should be able to shut off the computer using the power menu.
